A.P.C.'s Third Chapter

The first outside stylist-director hire — an affordable luxury brand's survival strategy.

A.P.C.'s Third Chapter

Bending 39 Years of Stubbornness, Choosing 'Survival'

Stiff raw denim, the fuss-free Half Moon bag, the textbook of the quiet, nonchalant Parisian.

The A.P.C. we know has been, for 39 years since its 1987 founding, the towering stubbornness — and philosophy incarnate — of founder Jean Touitou.

Affordable Luxury,

Trapped in the Sandwich Game

When L Catterton acquired A.P.C. in spring 2023, the goal was grand:

"Raise global recognition
and grow the brand fivefold."

But the timing was merciless. As fashion consumption froze after the pandemic, the 'affordable luxury' category A.P.C. belongs to became the victim of a brutal sandwich. From above, high-end luxury houses raised prices and pulled far away; from below, Zara absorbed niche designers and climbed fiercely up the ladder of 'fashion credibility.'

In that ambiguous middle zone, A.P.C.'s losses piled up, and the pressure of a bond maturity arriving next year began to bear down. That the newly arrived CEO left before lasting even a year is a cross-section of just how cold and heavy the reality facing this brand is.

Closing Stores, Redrawing the Board

Last December, the figure finally brought in to extinguish the crisis was Stephanie Phair — the digital commerce heavyweight who built up Net-a-Porter and steered strategy at Farfetch.

The interesting part: her appointment happened quietly, through internal notice alone, without a single glossy press release. The first card she drew after taking office was a 'distribution diet' — boldly closing underperforming stores and stripping down the cost structure. Her signature razor-sharp playbook is now in motion: cutting back offline, concentrating on digital and a selective distribution network.

The First Outsider in 39 Years — a Stylist, Not a Designer

But a skeleton alone doesn't sell clothes. This May, six months into Phair's tenure, the pen the Touitou couple gripped for 39 years passed to an outsider for the first time.

The new creative director: Ludivine Poiblanc.

What the industry noticed is that she isn't a classically trained 'designer' who drafts patterns — she's an 'editorial stylist' who built shoots at Vogue and Vanity Fair.

This is the most interesting trend in fashion right now. What A.P.C. needs isn't the 'invention' of a new silhouette. It's the 'curation of image and context' — repackaging an already excellent archive in the sensibility of the present. As Poiblanc herself put it, she intends to "imagine A.P.C.'s signature radical simplicity and quiet rebellion on a foundation of respect for the past."

Buyer & Industry Notes

Watch the Milan showroom on May 20, and the Paris runway on June 15. An editorial-bred AD's debut will show its biggest changes not in the shape of the clothes, but in material, color palette, and the styling language of the lookbook. The most important thing to watch: how far this 'new curation' can persuade the target customer of the FW26 buying season.

The venue for the new AD's first public runway is Rue Madame in Paris — the spiritual home base of A.P.C. since its founding. A paradoxical choice: staging the most radical, unfamiliar debut in 39 years in the most familiar space of all.
