The Couture of Bad Binch TongTong

3D sculptural silhouettes, unveiled through an official NYFW debut and selection as a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist.

The Couture of Bad Binch TongTong

"BAD BINCH TONGTONG stands at the intersection of fashion, art, performance, and chaos theory. Every one of our pieces is a question mark made real in 3D. If you came looking for basic staples, you've taken a wrong turn. If you crave conceptual fashion and 'main character syndrome,' you've come to the right place."

This is the first passage you encounter when you open the official About page of Bad Binch TongTong, a New York-based fashion brand. Its founder and designer, Terrence Zhou, is no maker of ordinary clothes. He is a creator who translates his work into visions downloaded from another dimension given wearable form, three-dimensional sculptures that happen to hang on the human body, performance art, and existential memes.

From Engineering to Fashion

Originally from Wuhan, China, Terrence Zhou immigrated to the United States at 17 and initially studied mathematics and engineering. He later switched to Parsons School of Design, went through an exchange program at Central Saint Martins (CSM), and graduated in 2020.

This mathematical background is why he cites "chaos theory" as one of the brand's identities. Just as tiny differences in initial conditions create massive, unpredictable change, he combines unexpected materials and geometric forms, such as condom dresses, ring pillars, spherical sculptures, and mermaid tails, to create an entirely new fashion language.

After launching the brand in 2021, he chose the path of an independent designer right away, without going through an assistant stage at a major house.

From Cesspit Couture to a Cosmic Egg

SS23 Debut: "The Best Collection in the World"
A show where models transformed into giant fluorescent butterflies, rubber-ring spiders, and centipedes. Dazed gave his radical rejection of fashion's established rules the name "Cesspit Couture." Combining fashion's highest language (couture) with its lowest concept (cesspit), the name became a signature expressing the brand's humor and unapologetic beauty.

SS25: "Whisper Across Dimensions"
Under the stained-glass light of St. Bartholomew's Church in New York, he presented pink lily gowns and orbiting metal bodysuits.

2026 AAPI Design Grant-Winning Collection
Inspired by Pangu, the Chinese creation myth, he reinterpreted the cosmic egg as "a protective shell and a threshold." Defining it with the words "innovation is not about replacing heritage, but helping tradition evolve while remaining in a state of becoming," Zhou layered a deep cultural narrative beneath the radical surface.

The Celebrity Committee

The designer defines "Bad Binch" in the brand name as "children, adults, and people of every gender and body type." Adding "TongTong," a Chinese term meaning "making a sound" or used as an affectionate form of address, the name captures both avant-garde edge and approachability.

Global celebrities, including Kim Kardashian, SZA, Lizzo, Kris Jenner, Eileen Gu, and Karlie Kloss, wear his designs of their own accord. Instead of the cliché "ambassadors," the brand calls them the "Internationally Certified Bad Binch Committee," building its own distinctive communication style.

Joining the Official CFDA Calendar and Earning Establishment Approval

New York Fashion Week (NYFW) SS27, arriving five years after the brand's launch, marked a watershed for Bad Binch TongTong, signaling that it has truly settled into the establishment. This season, it appeared on the official CFDA calendar for the first time, following its win of the CFDA/Genesis House AAPI Design + Innovation Grant and its selection as a 2026 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist, drawing attention from the high-end fashion world.

Terrence Zhou's 3D sculptural silhouettes and performance art, once dismissed as off-the-charts radicalism and dubbed "Cesspit Couture" a few years ago, have now been officially recognized as "the strategic intersection of commercial appeal and artistry," the point New York fashion is watching most closely.
