How Acne Studios Is Celebrating Its 30th Anniversary

To mark its 30th anniversary, Acne Studios has unveiled a series of projects connecting the brand's past and present. Starting with a commemorative campaign by Nan Goldin and denim re-editions unveiled in September, it opened a store in New York's Meatpacking District, and in October, it announced a collaboration capsule with Hussein Chalayan. It's a rollout that extends the history and design archive of a brand that began with denim into products, campaigns, and space.

Thirty Years That Began with 100 Pairs of Denim

Acne Studios began in Stockholm in 1996. The first 100 pairs of jeans Jonny Johansson made to share with friends at the brand's founding symbolize its starting point. The re-edition launched for the 30th anniversary reinterprets those early jeans for today, reviving the original design codes through flame patches and signature red stitching.

The lineup consists of the 1996, with a slim low-rise fit; the 2009, with a bootcut silhouette; and a denim jacket. The campaign, shot by Nan Goldin, features figures who have built relationships with the brand, including musician Ellie Rowsell, model and photographer Guinevere Van Seenus, and actor Juliette Lewis. Going beyond a product reissue, it spotlights 30 years of history through the people who have been part of the brand's journey.

The 30th Anniversary Meets a Designer's Archive

The Hussein Chalayan collaboration, unveiled on October 14, is another project celebrating the brand's 30th anniversary. It's a 12-piece capsule inspired by Chalayan's SS2001 collection "Ventriloquy," SS2002 collection "Medea," and SS2003 collection "Manifest Destiny."

Key pieces include patchwork denim jeans in Acne Studios' signature 1996 and 2009 fits and twisted silhouettes featuring a trompe-l'oeil python print. While bringing the brand's signature design codes into the collaboration, it connects not only its own archive but also another designer's past work to the present collection.

Acne Studios' World, Captured in Its New York Store

The New York Meatpacking District store, unveiled on September 9, is another touchpoint showing the brand's identity at its 30-year milestone. The new store was designed to go beyond a space for selling clothing, letting visitors experience Acne Studios' design and publishing archives together.

In particular, the Acne Paper library inside the store was positioned so it can be seen from the street, extending into physical space the brand's identity of connecting fashion and cultural content.

Insights for Buyers and Retailers

Rather than focusing on a single commemorative product, Acne Studios' 30th-anniversary project reintroduces the brand's core assets across multiple touchpoints. The denim re-edition recalls the brand's starting point, the Hussein Chalayan collaboration extends its design archive, and the new store connects its visual identity to physical space.

Rather than treating the re-editions and collaboration pieces as separate products, buyers can consider building an assortment that shares the brand's history and design codes. Maintaining consistency in core products while drawing on campaign and spatial content can help convey the background and points of difference behind the products.
